Colposcopy Digital Imaging System

A colposcope digital imaging system is used to perform a colposcopy, a medical diagnostic procedure to examine the cervix. With new technological advancement, the medical device now uses algorithms and different shades of color to highlight areas of interest to a clinician. The color rendition of the touch screen monitor needs to remain consistent through the life cycle of the product, as different shades indicate highlighted areas that may need further investigation. The system requires a full HD (1920 x 1080) display in a small, slim, and light form factor, with a high level of brightness, factoring in the treatment room's high ambient light. A 15.6” 500 cd/m² panel meets these parameters.

The unit is sealed correctly for the environment (IP54 to the front and IPX2 to the rear) to ensure it can be cleaned and disinfected with liquids and astringents, including 99 % isopropyl alcohol and Ethanol, to prevent the ingress of liquid which might damage the internal electronics. Canvys designed and tooled a unique plastic chassis with a sealed front bezel and no external rear vents to prevent ingress. In standard plastic case units, vents aid cooling, so our design team uses heat management electronics to meet these challenges.

The touch sensor can operate without gloves or with two layers of gloves. The touch sensor is thick to make it more robust. The addition of specialized coatings enhance the contrast of the image and limit external light reflection. Canvys’ engineering team designed-in long-life components to ensure a long product life cycle, and reduce the need for costly redesign and recertification.

Due to the strict regulatory controls in this environment, it was necessary to meet the EMI & EMC standard as required by the fourth edition IEC 60601-1-2 and meet other EU standards. As an ISO13485 approved medical device manufacturer, Canvys is certified to manufacture monitors to meet these and UL standards.

Vascular Surgery

Image-Guided Therapy Device for Vascular Surgery

Coronary imaging technology plays a vital role in diagnosing vascular diseases, a leading cause of death among men and women. These devices assist cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and vascular surgeons with treating, planning, and performing surgical procedures.

This Canvys customer is a leader in vascular intervention, focused on improving people’s health and enabling better outcomes across the health continuum from healthy living and prevention, to diagnosis, treatment, and home care.

The company manufactures a laser system with disposable catheters for treating peripheral and coronary arterial disease. The system utilizes photoablation (the use of light to break down, vaporize and remove matter) to remove binding arterial plaques.

The display solution project was initiated as an effort to improve the monitor design as part of the customer’s “next-gen” product release. The intent was to create a user interface that would meet mechanical requirements and provide interface connectivity while maintaining medical certifications in a long-life solution. Canvys was engaged as the display expert and was intimately involved in design efforts for HMI and build-related improvements. Project responsibility included pre-design verification build, functional prototype build, design verification build, and the production release.

Throughout program development, the customer along with Canvys’ engineering, program management, and sales teams worked together to develop the HMI parameters and product build characteristics. Canvys utilized existing and custom designs to develop a robust, long-term solution that could be readily implemented and approved by regulatory agencies. The customer ultimately chose to use Canvys for complete BOM sourcing and build at its ISO13485-approved facility in Marlborough, MA as a complete “one-stop solution” for its custom display requirement.

The Canvys engineering team, along with program management, sales and manufacturing team engaged with the customer to develop a solution that would meet system requirements. To minimize engineering time and expense, an existing monitor was chosen for a production baseline. A specification for optical performance to match the legacy product was developed, including parameters for brightness uniformity, chromaticity / color temperature, max brightness, and intensity / luminance. To ensure conformance to this specification (less than 10 % variation on each parameter), a calibration and validation test has been implemented for 100 % of production units. In addition, per customer request, Canvys created custom firmware for the monitor to disable typical ‘auto-off’ / power safe functionality as this would be disruptive to the system implementation.

To allow for the customer to use their existing power supply, Canvys recertified the product with UL and worked with the customer throughout their system level IEC 60601 and ESD test processes.

In der modernen Hornhautchirurgie geht es um eine sehr präzise Steuerung eines Femtosekundenlaser, um mit einem minimalen Eingriff, eine möglichst optimale Hornhautkorrektur zu erzielen. Ein innovatives Femtosekundenlasersystem vereint perfekt aufeinander abgestimmte Komponenten und bietet ein Höchstmaß an Schnittpräzision, Effizienz und späterem Komfort für den zu behandelnden Patienten. Nur so kann ein geringes Risiko von Infektionen, Epitheleinwachsungen und Flapkomplikationen sichergestellt werden.

Bis alle Hürden in Bezug auf Design, Systemspezifikationen und auch weltweite Zulassungen genommen sind, dauert die Entwicklung eines solchen Systems bis zu 5 Jahre.

Bei einem Femtosekundenlasersystem werden in der Regel zwei Displays mit verschiedenen Anforderungen benötigt.
Das Behandlungsdisplay sollte über eine möglichst hohe Auflösung und einen großen Blickwinkel verfügen, das Ganze bei hoher Helligkeit und Kontrastwerten. Dies ermöglicht ein hochqualitatives Videobild, welches dem Operateur während des automatisierten Eingriffes zur Kontrolle steht. Zur Steuerung der Einheit wird ein Multitouch basierend auf der PCAP-Touch-Technologie eingesetzt, welcher die Bedienung mit OP-Handschuhen ermöglicht und zusätzlich noch weitere Funktionalität durch die Gestensteuerung mit einbringt.

Beim Planungs- oder Beobachtungsdisplay werden größere Displaydiagonalen eingesetzt. Auch hier ermöglicht die anwenderfreundliche Benutzeroberfläche durch den Touchscreen effiziente Arbeitsabläufe. So können z.B. Patientendaten, Dokumentationen, Planungsansichten vom Arzt sowie die Bedienung der Medizingeräte einfach abgerufen und gesteuert werden.

Integrierte Schutzgläser mit unterschiedlichen Entspiegelungsmöglichkeiten zur Reduzierung von Reflexionen an der Glasoberfläche ermöglichen ein einwandfreies Reinigen des Displays mit Desinfektionsmitteln.
Das ergonomische Design der Displays mit integrierter Kabelabdeckung lässt sich problemlos über die VESA-Schnittstelle an bestehende Tragarme im OP einbinden.
Kundenspezifische Anforderungen wie z.B. ein Bootlogo, hinterdrucktes Kundenlogo auf dem Schutzglas oder Touchscreen sowie spezielle Anforderungen an das Material des Kunststoffgehäuses können ebenfalls umgesetzt werden.
