With over 35 years of experience developing and implementing customized display solutions for some of the largest medical OEMs in the industry, Canvys understands the unique challenges facing these customers and their end users — and we tackle them head-on.

Why Canvys for your medical applications?

We ensure the long term availability of your monitors

Each of our display solutions is engineered, designed and manufactured with the goal of stable and long term availability. We understand that most product life expectancies for OEM systems are 5 – 7 years or even longer. The system is only as strong as its weakest link. Changes to system components can cause considerable amounts of time and money to re-test, re-certify and re-train users. With this understanding, Canvys contracts with its suppliers to make sure that all components will be available for the duration of the project. During the project, we advise our customers when lower cost components are available in the event that a mid-cycle change makes financial sense.

We streamline OEM workflow processes

Working with the OEM during the consultation phase, Canvys engineers identify opportunities to improve workflow efficiency based on the needs of the environment. With the understanding that the OEM may have to physically handle or "install" the display when they receive it, the display solution is designed in a way such that the end result is a virtual plug and play or drop-in for the OEM. With this being achieved, the setup time is greatly reduced thus eliminating costs.

We improve and increase your monitors’ usability

As a value-added manufacturer and value-added integrator, Canvys has a vast amount of technology options available. By adding the right touch technology or a protective shield to a display, the end user experience can be greatly enhanced.

We ensure your monitors’ compatibility

Canvys engineers test OEM systems for compatibility in addition to testing touch, display, and peripheral drivers. This testing ensures that conflicts with any of the systems components are avoided.

Colposcopy Digital Imaging System

Colposcopy Digital Imaging System

A colposcope digital imaging system is used to perform a colposcopy, a medical diagnostic procedure to examine the cervix. With new technological advancement, the medical device now uses algorithms and different shades of color to highlight areas of interest to a clinician. The color rendition of the touch screen monitor needs to remain consistent through the life cycle of the product, as different shades indicate highlighted areas that may need further investigation. The system requires a full HD (1920 x 1080) display in a small, slim, and light form factor, with a high level of brightness, factoring in the treatment room's high ambient light. A 15.6” 500 cd/m² panel meets these parameters.

The unit is sealed correctly for the environment (IP54 to the front and IPX2 to the rear) to ensure it can be cleaned and disinfected with liquids and astringents, including 99 % isopropyl alcohol and Ethanol, to prevent the ingress of liquid which might damage the internal electronics. Canvys designed and tooled a unique plastic chassis with a sealed front bezel and no external rear vents to prevent ingress. In standard plastic case units, vents aid cooling, so our design team uses heat management electronics to meet these challenges.

The touch sensor can operate without gloves or with two layers of gloves. The touch sensor is thick to make it more robust. The addition of specialized coatings enhance the contrast of the image and limit external light reflection. Canvys’ engineering team designed-in long-life components to ensure a long product life cycle, and reduce the need for costly redesign and recertification.

Due to the strict regulatory controls in this environment, it was necessary to meet the EMI & EMC standard as required by the fourth edition IEC 60601-1-2 and meet other EU standards. As an ISO13485 approved medical device manufacturer, Canvys is certified to manufacture monitors to meet these and UL standards.

Modern corneal surgery involves precise control of a femtosecond laser to achieve the best possible corneal correction with minimal intervention. An innovative femtosecond laser system combines perfectly aligned components and offers the highest level of cutting precision, efficiency, and patient comfort. This technology is essential to ensure the best patient recovery with a low risk of infection, epithelial waxing, and flap complications.

The Canvys team began working with the eye laser system manufacturer from the inception of the project. A laser system typically takes up to five years to complete the design, system specifications, and prototypes and secure worldwide regulatory approvals. Our team of engineers worked closely with the company to design-in monitors that operated seamlessly with the surgical unit.

A femtosecond laser system usually requires two different displays. Our team designed a monitor for treatment with the highest possible video resolution and brightness, the widest viewing angle, and the best contrast values. This enables a high-quality video image for the surgeon to optimize control during the automated procedure. Our team added multi-touch capabilities using PCAP touch technology that provides system control, allowing operation with surgical gloves and bringing additional functionality through gesture control.

The Canvys team recommended large screen monitors for planning or observation. The display solution included a user-friendly touchscreen interface that enables efficient workflows, patient data viewing, documentation, and doctor-defined planning views. Other medical devices are also easily accessed and controlled from this monitor.

The Canvys display solutions featured integrated protective glass with different anti-reflective options reduces reflections on the display's surface and allows for proper cleaning of the monitor with disinfectants. The ergonomic design of the displays with integrated cable cover allows for easy installation on existing support arms in the operating room via a standard VESA interface.

Patient Monitoring – Bedside Monitoring

Custom Displays for Patient and Bedside Monitoring Systems

A patient monitor is an electronic medical device that consists of one or more monitoring sensors, processing component(s), and a monitor. These patient and bedside monitoring systems provide and record a patient's vital signs (body temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiratory rate) or measurements of the activity of various body organs.

At Canvys, we focus on the product so our customers can focus on the outcome. With over 30 years of experience working with medical OEMs worldwide, we deliver high-quality patient monitors that our customers can trust.

Our team recently worked with a leading global manufacturer of patient monitoring, sleep assessment, neurology, and cardiology equipment. Its patient and bedside monitor solution is a comprehensive parameter monitoring system with data storage and many other features.

The medical OEM required a partner to help design, engineer, manufacture, and support an open-architecture visual display monitor and user interface for its bedside units. Since these medical devices are the primary interface between the attending medical staff and the patient, requirements included a multi-touch interface (including gloved operation) and rugged, reliable operation within medical environments. Due to high regulatory and extended-life program timeframes, long-term production availability and configuration control were critical to minimizing program expenses. The application goals also included custom firmware to allow locking configuration parameters such as alarm volumes to ensure safe patient monitoring, and custom labeling for consistent branding and messaging across the system.

The Canvys team customized an existing patient and bedside monitoring platform that met the OEM’s program requirements while minimizing costs. Application-specific parameters, such as volume levels, were defined and validated to ensure proper notification alarms per customer requirements. Private branding included custom artwork on the label, logos on the product bezel, and a custom splash screen shown while the monitor boots up. The existing platform product had been tested to meet medical application EMI and safety requirements, minimizing the system-level regulatory testing risk.

Our configuration control and product life cycle management allow our customers to utilize Canvys as a long term partner – mitigating supply chain issues and end-of-life concerns. With dedicated engineering, program management, and a manufacturing team with over 30 years of experience, Canvys can deliver a customized visual technology solution that quickly and reliably integrates into the patient monitoring system, allowing our customers to focus their resources within their core competencies.

Patient Monitoring – Closed Circuit

Closed Circuit Patient Monitoring

Radiation therapy is commonly used to treat cancer. A linear accelerator targets a specific amount of high-energy waves at tumors or parts of the body to kill cancer cells and prevent them from spreading further.

During radiation therapy, the treatment team leaves the room and stands behind a protective barrier to protect them from repeated exposure. A closed-circuit television camera allows the therapist to stay in contact with the patient throughout the session.

The Canvys Closed Circuit Patient Monitoring solution was designed for a radiation oncology treatment and software company. Its medical devices include linear accelerators and software for treating cancer and other medical conditions with radiotherapy, radiosurgery, proton therapy, and brachytherapy.

The customer needed a partner to help design and support a closed-circuit monitoring system that would enable the technician to watch the patient from outside the treatment room. The assembly had to support different feeds from the camera over a long distance. Our team of engineers and technical experts were able to solve these design requirements and create an efficient, innovative solution.

The user-friendly Canvys solution includes an ergonomic LCD assembly designed for long term product availability to avoid costly redesigns and recertifications. The custom LCD monitor assembly includes an interface that connects directly to the in-room camera so the technician can control the pan-tilt-zoom features and monitor the patient during radiation treatment.
